Working Out the Real Operating Cost of a Compact Excavator

2026/09/23

When two compact excavators are quoted at different prices, the cheaper machine is not automatically the lower-cost machine. Operating cost is the sum of several lines, and the purchase price is only one of them.

What Makes Up Operating Cost

A working estimate combines five items: the acquisition price, fuel, scheduled maintenance and repairs, the cost of downtime, and the residual value at resale. Acquisition is the only one visible at the order stage. The other four accumulate over every hour the machine works, which is why they deserve the harder look.

Fuel and Maintenance

Fuel use follows engine size and workload, but maintenance follows build quality. Hoses that crack in ultraviolet light, seals that seep, and pins that wear quickly all convert into parts, labour and lost hours. Checking the component specification before purchase — hose brand and temperature rating, seal supplier, cylinder make, quenched pin hardness and structural steel grade — is a direct way to estimate future maintenance rather than hoping for it.

Downtime Costs More Than Parts

Parts are usually the smaller half of a breakdown. The larger half is the machine standing still while a crew waits, a site programme slips, or a rented replacement is paid for by the day. A single failed hose can cost more in idle time than the hose costs by a wide margin, and that asymmetry is what makes reliability the cheapest feature a machine can have.

Residual Value and Resale

Compact machines hold value differently by brand reputation, condition and service history. A machine that has been maintained against a written schedule, with inspection records and original components, is easier to sell and commands a better figure than one rebuilt from mixed parts.

A Simple Way to Compare Two Offers

Compare them on the same five lines, over the same number of working hours, and ask each supplier for the component list so the maintenance estimate is based on something real. Where the purchase price differs by a few hundred, the operating cost lines usually decide the winner.
